Update on Vote
Have your say in Squamish Nation governance. There is an Election and Referendum vote on May 31, which will affect the upcoming election and all Members.
How many people would you like to see on Council? One of the ballot questions we will be voting on is how many people should be on Council (8 or 16)? Currently, we vote for councillors to represent three separate areas (Squamish, North Shore & away from community). Would you like that to change? These are some of the seven questions that will be voted on May 31st.
The voting results will take effect for our next Council and Band Manager election in September 2025.

Notice of Referendum
January 31, 2025
The Squamish Electoral Commission has issued notice of a referendum taking place on May 31, 2025. The referendum will consider amendments to the Election and Referendum Law.
Click here to view the Official Notice for the May 2025 Referendum.
The Electoral Commission was established in 2015 to oversee fair and transparent elections and referendums. It is made up of seven voting members, two alternates, and one non-voting member. Each seat represents a particular region or demographic of the community.
About this Referendum
The Squamish Nation Electoral Commission has heard the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh People. Changes to our Electoral Law will be explored in upcoming Community and Family Meetings (February – March 2025).
Examples of possible changes and questions that may be considered as part of this referendum:
- Change in the number of councillors?
- Change from three ridings to a general election?
- Allow Council to choose its chairperson, or choose by general election?
- Change the number of immediate family members eligible for council at the same time, or keep no restrictions?
- Change our definition of “immediate family”?
- Change the two minute speaking rule at General Meetings?
This Electoral Reform will enable the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh people’s voices to be heard with more representation, inclusion, and transparency for generations to come.
If you have any questions, please email us at membership@squamish.net or call 604-982-7610.
