Nexwsxwníw̓ntm ta Úxwumixw

Nexwsxwníw̓ntm ta Úxwumixw is the decision-making body that sets the overall direction and policy agenda of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw, both internally and externally. Council ensures the Nation is provided with an effective administration, strong financial and resource stewardship, robust risk management, effective communications, and program and service delivery. It meets weekly on Thursdays.

Nexwsxwníw̓ntm ta Úxwumixw has a responsibility to govern the affairs of the Nation as a whole and uphold their fiduciary obligation for the well-being of the Members of the Nation. It is committed to providing exceptional service to our Membership and providing leadership in intergovernmental relations. Council believes in the core values of honesty, integrity, accountability and ownership, consistency and fairness, and achieve this through positive attitude, teamwork and a strong work ethic. 

Our vision and mission at Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw is focused on improving the quality of life for our Members and the community.

Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Name:  Nexwsxwníw̓ntm ta Úxwumixw

Nexwsxwníw̓ntm ta Úxwumixw could be interpreted as “Always Advised by the People”. Xwníw̓n refers to a core concept in Sḵwx̱wú7mesh ways of being that in order to give good advice, one would also have been given good advice. Elders would describe this as someone with good upbringing. The name refers to the way Nexwsxwníw̓ntm ta Úxwumixw is advised by the Squamish People and their role to listen to the advice of the people.

The Band Manager is elected by Membership for a four-year term and can also be referred to as the Community Advocate. This impartial advocacy role provides Membership with the access and right to be heard on important issues impacting their lives. The role does not include any financial or administrative authority.
