GST Exemptions on Energy Bills

Register today and save money

Eligible Squamish Nation Members can save on their energy bills by applying for a BC Hydro or FortisBC GST exemption. Members may receive a refund from past energy bills and will be exempt from paying GST in the future.

To be eligible for either exemption:

  • You must live on-reserve and have a status card.
  • You must be the primary BC Hydro or FortisBC account holder.
  • The primary account holder(s) must be the person named on the status card.
To apply for the BC Hydro exemption:
  • Call their customer service line at 1-800-224-9376 Monday to Friday from 7:00 am to 8:00 pm or Saturday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.
  • Send a copy of your status card by email to scan@bchydro.com or by mail to PO Box 8910, Vancouver, BC, V6B 4X3.

To apply for the FortisBC exemption:
  • Call their natural gas head office at 1-888-224-2710 Monday to Friday from 7:00 am to 8:00 pm or their electricity head office at 1-866-436-7847 Monday to Friday from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm.
  • Email a copy of your status card to customerservice@fortisBC.com.

BC Hydro can credit up to two years of GST payments for eligible customers. Please contact Fortis BC to determine if they can issue a refund. If they cannot, or to request a GST refund for periods longer than two years, follow the process outlined on the Canada Revenue Agency’s website.
