The Strategic Plan prioritizes planning for Elders’ homes, wellness supports, and places where they can gather to be together, be close to community, and practice Sḵwx̱wú7mesh traditions and culture – places built for and with Elders, including them throughout the process and taking their needs into consideration.
Since October 2023, Elders and Xwí7ski! (Let’s Go!) Elders Project Action Team (EPAT) have guided staff on how to enhance the well-being of Squamish Elders within Elder care programs, homes, and gathering spaces. In Spring 2024, Nexwsxwníw̓ntm ta Úxwumixw (Council) approved:
- Home and Community Care and Elder Home retrofit evaluation with 9 recommendations and 14 action areas
- Elder Centre Needs Assessments and emerging directions to increase Elder Centre space on North Shore and Squamish Valley
- North Shore Elder Centre expansion Business Plan to more than double the existing space and improve accessibility and parking
Next steps include:
- Enhance Elder Home and Community Care and house renovation and accessibility retrofit programs
- Complete North Shore Elder Centre expansion construction plans
- Work with Elders and all partners to progress design and site plans for Elder Villages as part of the Land Development Strategies, 600 Affordable Homes Plan (Squamish Valley), and Long Range Capital Plan (Squamish Valley and North Shore)
