Community members can view the vote results for the Election & Referendum Law below. Hardcopies of the vote results will be available at Totem Hall and Chief Joe Mathias Centre on June 1.
An overview of the results:
- 899 total voters
Changes:
- 16 Councillors
- Vote for all Councillors (remove the regions)
- Limit only one (1) immediate family member to be on Council
- 5-minute speaking limit at People’s Assembly meetings
Did not change:
- Definition of immediate family member
- All voters choose the Council chairperson
Changes passed from the May 31, 2025, referendum will be implemented and effective for the Squamish Nation General Election on September 28, 2025.

About the Electoral Commission
The Electoral Commission was established in 2015 to oversee fair and transparent elections and referendums. It is made up of seven voting members, two alternates, and one non-voting member. Each seat represents a particular region or demographic of the community.
Electoral Commission Members 2024-2028
On February 29, 2024, Council approved the appointment of the following Members to the Squamish Nation Electoral Commission for a term commencing on March 1, 2024 and ending on March 1, 2028, as follows:

(3) Lisa Baker (Resident of Squamish Valley)

The rules governing elections were contained in the 1981 Squamish Indian Band Election Regulations. In September 2015, Nexwsxwníw̓ntm ta Úxwumixw (Council) approved the creation of the Electoral Commission as an arms-length body to assist the Squamish People in exploring the topic of election reform. The following Members served this first term, engaging with the community and incorporating feedback on changes to the 1981 Regulations which resulted in the 2018 Election & Referendum Law.

Approval given for Second Floatel in Squamish
Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw Council approved the second floatel following a review process under the Squamish National Environmental Assessment Agreement (SNEAA) -- the first Indigenous-led environmental assessment of its kind.

We are unveiling The Valley’s Plan next month, a first of its kind in the Squamish Valley. It gathers all plans (past, present, future) and clearly explains what we would like to accomplish in the Squamish Valley over the next 10 years.
