Unveiling the Squamish Valley Community Plan

Unveiling the Squamish Valley Community Plan

We are unveiling The Valley’s Plan next month, a first of its kind in the Squamish Valley. It gathers all plans (past, present, future) and clearly explains what we would like to accomplish in the Squamish Valley over the next 10 years.

Ta Skwekwiy̓íntsuts ta Sx̱wéx̱wel, Squamish Valley Community Plan (also known as The Valley’s Plan), is a 10-year plan for the Squamish Valley that was made-in-the-Valley. It brings foundational projects that are in progress and projects identified by the community together under one umbrella and sets the vision for the future. As one Community Advisory Group member explains it, “We need to stand at the top of the mountain and see all, so we can help everyone.”

The Valley’s Plan was built on historical knowledge, decades of engagement, community priorities, and future needs. While developing the plan, we made sure to include ideas from previous plans (50+ documents spanning decades), community engagement over the past year, and input from a 12-person Community Advisory Group made up of Squamish Valley residents.

One of the tasks for the Community Advisory Group was to determine what exactly is the Squamish Valley? The land designated as the Squamish Valley extends south to Porteau Cove and across Howe Sound to Ḵw’émḵw’em. It includes all the watersheds that flow into Howe Sound north of this boundary. It’s a significant area in many ways, deserving of an official plan.

The Squamish Valley Community Plan is organized around three elements – Quick Start Actions, Next Steps and “Seeds” representing future projects. The first actions in the plan are expected to start in early 2026. In this work, we are committed to honouring our Sḵwx̱wú7mesh ways, incorporating a health and wellness lens, creating opportunities for our community members, and building capacity for future job opportunities.

The Valley’s Plan is considered a steppingstone to achieving and implementing the Úxwumixw 2050: Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Generational Plan.

It will inform Chairperson and Council’s decisions and plans for the future of the Squamish Valley.
