On October 8, 2019, Nexwsxwníw̓ntm ta Úxwumixw (Council) approved the creation of a housing society called “Hiy̓ám̓ ta Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Housing Society,” which means “The Squamish Are Coming Home.”
Hiy̓ám̓ Housing is a not-for-profit organization that is mandated to lead the development and management of non-profit housing for the Squamish People. It is an arms-length organization overseen by a volunteer Board of Directors responsible for hiring and supervising Hiy̓ám̓ Housing’s CEO, who leads the organization’s day-to-day operations.
In May 2020, the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw approved six sites to be put forward for Hiy̓ám̓ Housing to develop. The six sites represent the largest designation of lands for affordable rental housing in the Nation’s history.
On July 28, 2021, approximately 550 Nation Members cast their ballots in the Affordable Housing Land Designation Referendum, voting yes to approve the first three of six parcels of land.
These developments will create hundreds of new affordable homes in multi-unit dwellings built exclusively for Members and provide much-needed equitable and diverse housing options.
