On October 8, 2019, Nexwsxwníw̓ntm ta Úxwumixw (Council) approved the creation of a housing society called “Hiy̓ám̓ ta Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Housing Society,” which means “The Squamish Are Coming Home.”

Hiy̓ám̓ Housing is the not-for-profit organization mandated to lead the development and management of non-profit affordable housing for the Squamish People. Hiy̓ám̓ Housing currently manages 56 affordable housing units and they are also leading the development in Vancouver, North Shore, and Squamish Valley of 424 confirmed new affordable rental homes. They are mandated to deliver 1,000 new homes for the Squamish People and contribute to the Squamish Nation’s goal of housing every Squamish within a generation.

Hiy̓ám̓ Housing also manages the Hiy̓ám̓ Loan Program that provides Squamish Nation lot holders with the opportunity to apply for between $250,000 to $500,000 home construction loans through partnership with select financial institutions to help with the construction cost of new Member-owned homes. Hiy̓ám̓ Housing also manages the Rental Assistance Program, which provides $250-700 financial relief to Squamish Nation Members renting in market rental housing.

In May 2020, the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw approved six sites to be put forward for Hiy̓ám̓ Housing to develop. The six sites represent the largest designation of lands for affordable rental housing in the Nation’s history.

On July 28, 2021, approximately 550 Nation Members cast their ballots in the Affordable Housing Land Designation Referendum, voting yes to approve the first three of six parcels of land.

These developments will create hundreds of new affordable homes in multi-unit dwellings built exclusively for Members and provide much-needed equitable and diverse housing options.
