Update: Bill S-2 amendments to the Indian Act
Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation) Council submitted a letter to Parliament supporting Bill S-2, An Act to amend the Indian Act (new registration entitlements).
Bill S-2 is proposed legislation in the Parliament of Canada aimed at eliminating historical sex- and race-based discrimination and addressing long-standing inequities within the Indian Act. This important legislation aligns with the aspirations of our Squamish People.
Recently, Bill S-2 has been amended in the Senate to include significant changes that we believe support our Community’s interests:
– Second-Generation Cut-Off: The introduction of a single-parent rule will allow Indian status to be passed on indefinitely to future generations, addressing a long-standing issue that has affected many families.
– Removal of No Liability Clauses: The initial clauses that posed liability concerns have been removed, ensuring that the amendments are in the best interest of our Community.
