Year in Review

This past year marked an important milestone with the launch of Úxwumixw 2050: Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Generational Plan. Released in November 2024, this long-term community plan reflects the vision and goals set by Sḵwx̱wú7mesh People for their government. More than 400 Members contributed over 1,500 ideas through engagement sessions, shaping a collective 25-year vision for social, cultural, economic, and environmental wellbeing.

“We worked hard to increase the effectiveness of our programs and services through collaboration, cultural values, and accountability for budget performance. The results of those efforts are highlighted in this 2024/5 Annual Report.”

Sheldon Tetreault , Chief Administrative Officer

Our budgeting and planning continue to be guided by Úxwumixw 2050, the 2026 Strategic Plan, and the voices of our People. Housing remains a leading priority, with all three towers of Phase One at Sen̓áḵw reaching full height, and Tower 1 on track for completion in 2025. Tenants will be welcomed in early 2026 — an important step in bringing our People back home to Sen̓áḵw. Through the Hiy̓ám̓ ta Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Housing Society, we will be breaking ground on another 200 units of deeply affordable housing for Squamish People.

More highlights:

  • Opening of the Ha7lh sḵwalwnawtxw (Healthy Hub): We are also close to completing the Ha7lh sḵwalwnawtxw (Healthy Hub) in Squamish Valley, with a soft opening expected in early 2026 and full services by spring 2026. This new Hub will provide improved, culturally grounded health and wellness services for our community.
  • Climate Action: Environmental stewardship continues to be a priority. In 2024, the Nation released its Climate Legacy Strategy, a long-term plan to advance climate action rooted in Sḵwx̱wú7mesh values. We also worked with partners to restore 144 hectares of habitat at Skwel’wíl’em as part of the Central Estuary Restoration Project.
  • Elders’ Villages: This year also saw progress in planning for two Elders’ Villages, one in Squamish Valley and one on the North Shore, supporting the wellbeing of Elders and connecting future generations to knowledge keepers.
  • Squamish-led Education: The Nation continued important work to reclaim and uplift Sḵwx̱wú7mesh education. The s7ulh wa nexwniw̓ éyalh (Our Ways of Education) plan was completed, outlining a path toward a Squamish-led education system, grounded in language, culture, and community.
  • Repatriation: Work in cultural revitalization also continued with 16 ancestral belongings repatriated from the Canadian Museum of History, now exhibited at the Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre — bringing these important items home to our People.

As we look ahead, the collective voice of Sḵwx̱wú7mesh People has identified four guiding feelings at the heart of what matters most: trust, security, purpose, and belonging. These values will continue to guide our decision-making and planning for the next 25 years.

We raise our hands to our People today, to those who came before us, and to the generations yet to come.
