Statement on reports of expansion to the Woodfibre LNG Facility in Squamish

The Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation) is aware of recent news reports outlining a possible expansion in capacity of the Woodfibre LNG facility now under construction in Squamish.

The Woodfibre LNG Project consists of a liquified natural gas (LNG) facility at the former Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw village site of Swiy̓át, which was also the former Woodfibre pulp and paper mill on the west side of Howe Sound. The natural gas for Woodfibre LNG will come from the FortisBC Eagle Mountain – Gas Pipeline Project (EGP). Natural gas will be delivered through 50km of new natural gas pipeline between Coquitlam and the Woodfibre LNG site.

Chairperson Sxwíxwtn Wilson Williams has prepared this response to the reports of expansion of the project.

The Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation) has not received any formal application from Woodfibre LNG (WLNG) regarding a potential increase to its facility’s capacity. Should WLNG submit such an application to amend the Squamish Nation Environmental Assessment Agreement (SNEAA), the Nation — in its role as a regulator on this project — would subject it to a full review under the SNEAA, consistent with the processes that would also be undertaken by both the provincial and federal governments.
