Heat and smoke are affecting Átl’ḵa7tsem (Howe Sound) and Squamish Valley
Today, July 21, Átl’ḵa7tsem (Howe Sound) and Squamish Valley are under a heat warning. Temperatures are expected to surpass 30 degrees, and the high heat is anticipated to last until Thursday.
Wildfire smoke may arrive in the area this afternoon.
Extreme heat events (periods of higher-than-average temperatures) can put our health at risk.
We want our Community to be prepared for this hot weather.
- Take precautions and check in on loved ones, especially Elders and those who are vulnerable, or who live alone.
- Avoid heat-related illnesses by finding ways to stay cool.
- Monitor for effects of heat illness. These include heavy sweating, rashes, cramps, fainting, and high body temperature.
- Keep your home cool. If you have air conditioning, turn it on. Block the sun with curtains or blinds and relocate to cooler spots like a basement.
Cooling centres:
For those in our community looking for spaces to cool down, there are designated Cooling Centres:
North Shore: Chief Joe Mathias Centre, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.
Squamish Valley (two locations): Totem Hall, Youth Centre on Axen Road, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.

Check the Air Quality Health Index for the latest updates. People with heart or breathing problems are at greater risk and should consider reducing or rescheduling strenuous activities outdoors.
