Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation) celebrates Elder Gwen Harry, who was recognized yesterday with the Order of British Columbia. A total of 15 individuals will be honoured this year at a ceremony in Victoria on September 16, 2025.
The Order of BC is the province’s highest honour and acknowledges individuals from all walks of life and fields of work, who have made extraordinary contributions.
Gwen Harry will be recognized for her commitment to healing and decolonizing education, as well as her dedication to preserving Sḵwx̱wú7mesh sníchim (Squamish language) and traditions.
“Our language holds the wisdom of our ancestors. When we speak it, we honour their strength and pass it forward…When the young ones carry our traditions forward, that’s when I know my work matters”, remarked Gwen Harry.
Her leadership in oral storytelling, ceremonial practices, and land-based teachings has deepened ties between generations. We raise our hands to Elder Gwen Harry for her far-reaching impact and dedication to her work.
