The North Shore Elders Centre expansion is expected to be complete by years’ end.
The project, led by Ta na wa Shéway I7x̱w ta Úxwumixw (Planning & Capital Projects), is right on schedule.
Elders should be able to start moving back into the renovated centre by the end of January 2027.
Recent project work includes installing new windows, interior finishings, as well as re-establishing service connections such as hydro, water and sewer.
The new Elders Centre will be more than double in size from the original – with room for up to 140 Elders. It includes larger dining and lounge spaces to gather in, an expanded kitchen and a traditional medicine garden.
Squamish Elders co-created the design to allow for important traditions such as an arts and culture space large enough to accommodate looms for weaving.
During construction on the Centre, access to the Shaker Church and Longhouse is being maintained.
