Approval given for Second Floatel in Squamish

Approval given for Second Floatel in Squamish

A second floatel in Squamish, to support construction of the Woodfibre LNG Project, has been granted approval.

Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw Council approved the second floatel following a review process under the Squamish National Environmental Assessment Agreement (SNEAA) — the first Indigenous-led environmental assessment of its kind.

The Squamish Nation review was carried out in collaboration with the BC Environmental Assessment Office (EAO) under a Memorandum of Understanding that guides joint evaluation of project amendments. The EAO announced today, as did the federal regulator, that they have also granted approval for a second floatel.

The second floatel, which is expected to sit on the west side of Howe Sound, will provide housing for up to 735 additional non-local workers at the project site. This new accommodation vessel is in addition to the first floatel approved by the Nation in 2023.

Once in place, both floatels will house all non-local workers away from the Town of Squamish, with direct ferry transportation provided between Metro Vancouver and the project site. This approach helps avoid pressure on local housing, services and community spaces.

The second floatel is expected to arrive in late 2025.

The Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw continues as a regulator on the project under the SNEAA through our team of regulatory specialists, indigenous monitors and community outreach coordinators.
