New Council Resolution on Public Safety

New Council Resolution on Public Safety

Council has declared a new State of Emergency in response to the toxic drug crisis and its impact on our people, families and communities.

The ongoing toxic drug crisis disproportionately impacts Indigenous people, including many of our Sḵwx̱wú7mesh People, and is causing deep and lasting harm to Squamish families, communities and loved ones.

The State of Emergency is part of a council resolution to implement emergency public safety measures. As part of this emergency response, Council has directed immediate action, including increased security measures, expanded outreach to Elders and vulnerable members, and next steps to address unsafe or illegal activity on reserve.

Funding from the Squamish Nation Emergency Fund will support this work during the next four months, while long-term planning begins to take shape. These actions are being set in place to strengthen community safety, protect our people, and build pathways toward long-term healing grounded in Squamish teachings and values.
