Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw Fireworks Ban in Effect

With Halloween right around the corner, Ta na wa Téy wilhay̓lhem (Public Safety) is reminding Members fireworks are not permitted on any Swx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw land.

Nexwsxwníw̓ntm ta Úxwumixw (Council) passed the Swx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw Fireworks Ban Bylaw in September 2024 after listening to concerns from the Nation about safety, environmental impacts, and the wellbeing of pets and wildlife.

This bylaw prohibits the use, promotion, sale, and possession of fireworks on all reserve lands. It also brings the Nation into alignment with its neighbouring municipalities which have also banned fireworks.

Ta na wa Téy̓wilhay̓lhem is now actively monitoring for fireworks violations throughout the Community.

Fines for those caught breaking the fireworks ban start at $250 per infraction, per day, and the fines can reach up to $1,000 for multiple violations. For example, someone could be fined $250 for storage, $250 for promotion, $250 for selling, and $250 for possession – and multiplied for each day in violation of the bylaw. If you have any questions about the fireworks ban, or want to report violations, please contact public_safety@squamish.net or 604-982-9938.

Together, we can keep our communities, animals, and lands safe this Halloween season.
