External Call for Artists
This call asks for one artist or artist team from Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw to produce original art, using Sḵwx̱wú7mesh design form, and be creatively involved in shaping the VANCOUVER Sign project.
The overall intent is to create an equal opportunity for representation and expression from xʷməθkʷəy̓əm, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw, and səlilwətaɬ on the VANCOUVER Sign. To this end, there will be three separate artist calls to select one artist or artist team from each Nation. Each artist or artist team will work closely with the VANCOUVER Sign project team – the project design team and City staff – on technical specifications and to meet the project timeline.
- Budget: $25,000 per artist or artist team
- Submission deadline: January 2, 2026
Vancouver Coastal Health is seeking an Indigenous artist from Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation) or Líl̓wat Nation to create a digital artwork design for display at a clinic in Whistler.
This artwork opportunity will result in a print-ready digital design to be produced as a vinyl banner and installed in the clinic’s reception area. The project aims to honour the Nations on whose territory the facility is located and to help create a welcoming and inclusive space for Indigenous clients accessing services at the site.
The selected artist will be invited to meet with the VCH team to learn more about the clinic and develop a concept that supports a culturally safe environment. Vancouver Coastal Health will be responsible for printing and installation.
Dimensions: 10’ 10” × 4’ 9 ¾”
Artist fee: Up to $2,400 (design fee, includes print-ready digital file)
Submission deadline: January 16, 2026
NOTE: Deadline extended to February 2, 2026 at 5 PM.
Vancouver Fraser Port Authority is seeking artists from xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh), and kʷikʷəƛ̓əm (Kwikwetlem) Nations to create original column wrap designs for the Holdom Overpass in Burnaby.
This is a design-only call for Indigenous artists to create digital column wrap artwork that will be installed on the overpass piers. Each Nation will receive two column wrap opportunities, wrapping around Pier 3 and Pier 4 columns, directly across from one another. The project integrates public art into major transportation infrastructure and celebrates Indigenous presence on the land.
Artists at all stages of their career are encouraged to apply. Submitted designs must be original works created entirely by the artist. Final designs will be submitted in vector digital format using Illustrator or Photoshop. Printing and installation will be handled by the project team.
Artists are asked to incorporate the theme of weaving, celebrating kinship ties between the Nations.
Honorarium: $250 (excluding GST) for each completed submission
Design budget: $6,000 per column design
Submission deadline: February 2, 2026 at 5 PM
Proposals are to be submitted electronically via email to holdomart@portvancouver.com and include the
Submission Form identified in Appendix 2 (one PDF file attachment preferred). Late proposals will not
be accepted.
