ELECTRONIC VOTING AND MESSAGE FROM GLEN NEWMAN

I am writing to you today to say that we must all vote on April 4, 2013.
I have attended several scheduled major meetings, reviewed the Membership Code amendments, and support the work the Registry Department has undertaken to allow discussions in a respectful manner. As a result, I have determined:
All eligible Squamish Nation voters are now responsible for determining Squamish Membership. It is important to get out and vote.
We are addressing the discriminatory clauses in the Squamish Nation 2000 Membership Code by conducting this vote.
We have the opportunity to strengthen our Membership Code to determine who we are as a people.
I, Glen Newman support voting “Yes” on all questions. The reasons I support the yes vote are as follows:
Ballot question #1: A yes will allow a grandchild with 25% Squamish Nation blood to become a “Lineal” member of the Squamish Nation, as long as that grandchild also has status under the Indian Act. Unless this child marries another Squamish member, he/she cannot pass on membership.
Ballot question #2a: Allows the child of a Squamish Descendant member and another Status Indian (from another First Nation) to become a “Descendant” member of the Squamish Nation.
Ballot question #2b: Allows the child of a Squamish Lineal Member and another Status Indian (from another First Nation) to become a “Lineal” member of the Squamish Nation.
Ballot question #3: Will remove gender discrimination as it applies to the Non-Squamish male partner in a marriage (who is a Status Indian and a member of another First Nation).
Ballot question #4: To allow the Squamish Nation to conduct business in a timely manner.
We have an obligation to our families, to our Nation, and to unborn generations, to come out and have our voices heard. These are tough issues, and we must do the right thing.
Come out and vote in person on Thursday, April 4, 2013 9:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. at the following Polling Stations:
Totem Hall – 1380 Stawamus Road, Squamish BC
Chief Joe Mathias Centre – 100 Capilano Road, North Vancouver, BC
