TOWARDS A SQUAMISH NATION HOUSING SOCIETY (OPEN HOUSE PRESENTATION)

Two “Towards a Squamish Nation Housing Society” Open Houses were held in September 2019 to present information about what a housing society is, and about the proposed governance structure of—as well as a draft mission, vision, and values for—a Squamish Nation Housing Society. Squamish Nation Members can download the presentation here.

HIY̓ÁM̓ TA SḴWX̱WÚ7MESH HOUSING SOCIETY

On October 8, 2019, the Squamish Nation Council approved the creation of a housing society called “Hiy̓ám̓ ta Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Housing Society,” which means “The Squamish Are Coming Home.”

A board of seven directors (3 SN members, 4 independent), appointed to two and four-year terms, will be tasked with helping build the society with staff, project development, and building 1,000+ affordable housing units for Squamish Nation members in North Shore and Squamish Valley.

Hiy̓ám̓ will help us with:

  • 1,000+ affordable and supportive housing
  • non-market rentals with rent tied to incomes
  • housing built on SN lands
  • developing and property managing the units
