August 20, 2020, North Vancouver, BC — The Squamish Nation is pleased to announce the appointment of Denis Murphy as Director of Finance for the Nation.
Denis is a Chartered Certified Accountant with 15 years of experience in accounting, finance, controls development, and strategy and operations consulting, including three years working with public health bodies in British Columbia.
“We are happy to welcome Denis as the new Director of our Finance department, where he will continue working to rebuild trust with membership through fiscal transparency and policy-driven, responsible allocation of the Nation’s resources,” said Chris Lewis, Syeta’xtn, Councillor and Spokesperson for the Squamish Nation.
Denis previously led the finance function at BC Cancer, where he was responsible for developing financial plans and funding programs as part of a strategic initiative to bring care closer to home, particularly for rural patients. As part of the BC Cancer Executive, he worked to secure additional funding to improve cancer care and deliver services within the community.
“I’m delighted to be joining Squamish Nation at a time when there is a great deal of excitement about the future and a real desire to make a positive economic and social impact. It’s an honour to be trusted with the task of ensuring the members have confidence in the financial performance of the Nation. I’m confident that together we can continue to build the prosperity of the Nation,” said Denis.
Denis graduated from Imperial College London with a degree in Physics and is fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants in the UK. He trained with the Mitchell Charlesworth accounting and business advisory firm before moving to the Virgin Islands to work with another firm, Baker Tilly.
