Metro Vancouver Notice
First Narrows Tunnel Improvements Project
Metro Vancouver provides a reliable source of safe, high quality drinking water to residents and business across the region through a system of watersheds, dams, treatment facilities, reservoirs, pump stations and water mains.
Operating our vast drinking water system requires constant upgrades, improvements, repairs and expansion, in order to meet the needs of a growing population.
Metro Vancouver will be replacing and upgrading two aging valves that help control water flow through the First Narrows Tunnel Crossing, a water supply tunnel located deep under Burrard Inlet that delivers water from the Capilano Watershed to the City of Vancouver and to the southwestern parts of the region. These valves are housed within two valve chambers located along the Capilano corridor, south of Marine Drive and within Metro Vancouver’s works yard south of Welch Street (please see map on reverse).
Construction Schedule, Activities and Traffic Impacts
Construction south of Marine Drive is scheduled to begin in late October 2020 and will be completed by mid-December 2020. Construction activities will include preparatory work, excavation, installation of water valves and road restoration.
In order to complete the work safely and efficiently, the following traffic changes (see map on next page) will be in place along the Capilano corridor, between Marine Drive and Welch Street, from November 2 to December 13, 2020:
• Capilano corridor will be temporarily closed to southbound through traffic from Marine Drive.
• Northbound traffic beside the construction area to Marine Drive will be maintained for local traffic only.
• Two-way traffic south of the entrance to the International Plaza along the Capilano corridor will be maintained for local traffic only.
• Two-way traffic along Mathias Road to and from Marine Drive will be maintained for local traffic only.
Please follow detour signage and directions from traffic control personnel.
Construction within Metro Vancouver’s works yard south of Welch Street is scheduled to begin in early 2021 for approximately three months. There are no traffic impacts anticipated for this work.
