MUSQUEAM, SQUAMISH and TSLEIL-WAUTUTH NATIONS
March 21, 2014
Dear Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh Nation Members,
The Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh Nations encompass vast traditional territories that, taken together, include shared areas in the lower mainland. Our Nations, as part of the Coast Salish families, are each connected through ancestral names, tradition, culture, and spirit, just as we are connected to this land that has been our home since time immemorial. It is through these connections that we celebrate who we are as family.
In keeping with our ancestral relationship, our Nations have come together to continue to protect our home and shared lands for the use of our families and members, and to create long-term economic benefits from use of these shared lands, water, air and resources. This is based on an inherent and common respect that has been in place between us for over 10,000 years.
In doing so, our three Councils are very pleased to announce that the three Nations have entered into a historic Protocol Agreement that refreshes and reaffirms our long-standing relationship. This Agreement celebrates our cultural and family connections and outlines the practical mechanisms for equally sharing economic benefits arising from crown land sales occurring in our shared lands. The Agreement also lays the foundation for working together as business partners in the acquisition and development of some significant properties in the Vancouver area as part of a long-term investment strategy that will benefit our communities for generations to come.
We look forward to sharing more about this historic Agreement in the days and months ahead and to host a joint community event this summer to honour our past and celebrate our bright and exciting future together.
We raise our hands to you all for your support in this work.
