Hiy̓ám̓ ta Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Housing Society: Call for One (1) Nation Member Board Director (Voluntary Position)

Hiy̓ám̓ ta Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Housing Society (also referred to as “Hiy̓ám̓ Housing” or “the Society”) is the new not-for-profit organization mandated to lead the development and management of non-profit housing for the Squamish People and raise the standard of housing for the community. The organization is mandated to build on strong cultural practices and traditions of the Squamish Nation. Hiy̓ám̓ Housing is currently developing their strategic plan to identify their deliverables for housing in the next five years.

We are seeking one (1) Squamish Nation member to serve on Hiy̓ám̓ ta Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Housing Society’s Board of Directors. The successful candidate will fill a Squamish Nation member position on the Board and serve the remainder of the term of the vacant position (ending December 3, 2023). This is an exciting opportunity for a skilled and dynamic individual to contribute to and help shape the new Squamish Nation Housing Society.

Term lengths for the Board of Directors vary between two and four years. Terms will be staggered to ensure retention of corporate knowledge. The structure of the Board of Directors will include three (3) Squamish Nation members and four (4) non-members to provide internal as well as external expertise, education and skills.

Role Purpose

The members of the Housing Society will be the Squamish Nation Council, and the Board of Directors shall be appointed by Council.

The Board of Directors will receive overall direction from Council and will be responsible for operation of the Society. The Board will be a policy board and will provide input in areas such as governing structure, finance, human resources, tenant relations, operations and maintenance, housing development, and infrastructure. The Board will report to the Members of the Society and will provide strategic direction to the Housing Society’s CEO.

Commitment

Board members will be required to attend regularly scheduled meetings as well as being expected to attend the Annual General Meeting, special events, and fulfilling other commitments of the role. There will be a minimum of six meetings per year, and Directors will be required to read all documents and materials provided in advance, and participate fully in the meetings.

Qualifications

Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate knowledge and skills in one or more of the following areas:

  • Market and non-market housing development
  • Squamish
    Nation communities, history and culture
  • First Nations socio-economic needs and realities
  • Board governance and the non-profit sector
  • Fundraising, grant funding, loan management and finance
  • Human resources
  • Partnership development
  • Environmental sustainability and energy efficient technologies
  • Government relations
  • Oral and written communications

In selecting the Board of Directors, the Council will utilize a matrix selection process to ensure a broad range and diversity of skills, knowledge, experience, and expertise.
