FIRE HEALTH AND SAFETY CONCERNS

We would like to remind members of the health and safety implications of fires in the community. Members with health issues cannot inhale smoke because it can make their symptoms worse or exacerbate their condition; this is especially important in these times. For the health and safety of the community, fires in backyards and anywhere on-reserve are not permitted.

The only fires that are permitted on-reserve are for cultural purposes. When planning a cultural burning, members must notify Community Operations and a staff member will attend the site to ensure that there is a water source available to maintain the fire.

Furthermore, there is a Provincial fire ban in place. Fire bans and restrictions are implemented as local fire hazards or dangers, weather conditions and fire activity demand, to help to protect the population of, and property and values in British Columbia. Fire bans and restrictions apply to all public and private land, unless specified otherwise.

Squamish Nation members should call the local fire department if they are concerned about a fire in their neighbour’s backyard or in the community.
