42ND PROVINCIAL BC ELECTIONS: VOTING INFORMATION FOR SQUAMISH NATION MEMBERS

The Squamish Nation Council would like to encourage all eligible members 18+ to exercise their right to vote in the upcoming BC election.

Voting Opportunities

Because this election is taking place during a pandemic situation, BC Elections have taken every precaution to insure voting is a safe experience.

Every person in British Columbia who is registered to vote will receive a where to vote card that indicate where their poll is located on election day and the addresses and names of the polling places that are being used for Advanced Voting.

Voting Options

NORTH VANCOUVER

General Voting

General Voting takes place on Saturday October 24th between 8:00 am and 8:00 pm.

In the North Vancouver Lonsdale riding there will be 16 Voting Places. The Chief Joe Mathias Center is one of these locations. Many Squamish Nation members will be directed to CJMC. Other members may be directed to Norgate School, The Pipe Shop, and Ridgeway School, etc. The most convenient way to vote during the general election day is to go to the polling place printed on your Where to Vote card, however you can go to any of the locations including the CJMC.

Advance Voting

Advance Voting takes place for 7 consecutive days starting on Thursday October 15th through Wednesday October 21st in up to 4 locations in the North Vancouver Lonsdale riding. Hours of operation are 8:00 am to 8:00 pm.

The locations are The Pipe Shop at Lonsdale Quay, Capilano Mall Unit 102, The Graham Smith Gallery in the NVSD Building at 2121 Lonsdale and St. Agnes Anglican Church. Squamish Nation members who cannot vote on October 24th or simply find it more convenient to vote earlier during these days can vote at any of these centers.

SQUAMISH

General Voting
General Voting takes place on Saturday October 24th between 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Voting will take place at the following locations:

Totem Hall: 1380 Stawamus Rd, Squamish
Seat to Sky Hotel: 40330 Tantalus Rd, Squamish
Garibaldi Highlands Elementary School: 2590 Portree Way, Squamish
Don Ross Middle School: 42091 Ross Rd, Squamish

Please refer to the back of your Voter Information Card to confirm your polling location.

Advance Voting

Advance Voting takes place from October 15 -21, 2020 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the following locations:

55 Activity Centre: 1201 Village Green Way, Squamish
Seat to Sky Hotel: 40330 Tantalus Rd, Squamish

Vote by Mail

Given some individuals desire not to physically go to voting places, the option of Vote by Mail has been given to all British Columbians.

In order to do so Squamish Nation members must go to the website:
www.elections.bc.ca

Once there, click on the request a vote by mail package. There is several steps to confirm identity and that the voter is registered to vote. Once completed a Vote by Mail package will be sent to your address. You then can complete your ballot and mail the package back to Elections BC.

Pandemic Safety Precautions

All voting places including CJMC will follow COVID safety protocols. This includes physical distancing between voting stations and for all voters and BC Elections staff. All common surfaces will be regularly wiped down and there will be safety screens for the Voting Officers to be behind and rubber gloves for Voting Officers to wear.

Traffic flow will be set up to allow an effective in and out route which will minimize the opportunity to be within 6 feet of another individual.

All BC Elections staff will wear masks or face shields and in some cases be behind plexi-glass safety screen. All voters will be asked to wear a mask when in the voting place and if they do not have one a mask will offered one free of charge.

Working for BC Elections

BC Elections will be hiring almost 25,000 people to work in various jobs during the up-coming Provincial Election. These jobs include Voting Officers and Information Officers. These jobs take place in voting places throughout the various Electoral Districts.

Should members of the Squamish Nation wish to work for BC Elections, they can go to the website: www.elections.bc.ca

Click on the jobs tab and the instructions are there to follow to apply to work. This should be done quickly as with the requirement for training many of these jobs are filling up.
