BC Rail, Squamish Estuary, and Porteau Cove Lands Agreement between BC Rail, The Province of BC and The Squamish Nation
[Agreement Signed August 21, 2000]
The purpose of this bulletin is to explain the details of a Proposed Agreement between: BC Rail Corporation, the Government of BC, and the Squamish Nation.
At this time, the Proposed Agreement is referred to as an Agreement-In-Principle. The Squamish Nation will not acquire rights and lands described in this Agreement until a Final Agreement is signed by each of the parties.
There are 7 parcels of land that form part of this Agreement. They are as follows:
Lands in the Squamish Estuary – (Parcels 1 – 5)
- Parcel No. 1: Squamish Estuary Wildlife Management Area Lands
- Parcel No. 2: Site A
- Parcel No. 3: Site B
- Parcel No. 4: BC Rail Shop Lands (adjacent to IR 18)
- Parcel No. 5: Third Party Lands (adjacent to IR 24)
Lands at Porteau Cove – Parcels (6 – 7)
This Agreement, if approved by the membership at two general meetings on June 27 and June 29, would allow the Squamish Nation to acquire benefits from the Province of BC and BC Rail.
Benefits acquired by the Nation in the Agreement are different for each of the 7 parcels of land. For instance, the benefits acquired in relation to Parcel No. 3 are land ownership and economic development opportunities yet benefits acquired on Parcel No. 6 allow the Squamish Nation to purchase the parcel at a later date.
This bulletin outlines the benefits that can be acquired by the Squamish Nation on each of the 7 parcels in the Agreement and how much it will cost the Squamish Nation to acquire the rights today or in the near future.
