VIDEO: The proposed Squamish Land Code can replace the land management
provisions of the Indian Act. All other provisions of the Indian Act
(for example, provisions related to guardianship, taxation, schools and estates) will remain in force.

Land Code

It is time for the Squamish Nation to move out from under the land management provisions of the Indian Act. The reserve system has never worked for us. The Squamish Land Code will, if approved by membership, replace parts of the Indian Act related to land management.

RE: Official Results of the Referendum Land Designation Vote

Designating all of Lots 1 and 3 on Kitsilano IR #6


Held 13th day of August, 2009

Chiefs and Council and Band Manager, Glen Newman thank the Squamish Nation

Membership for casting their ballot for the above Land Designation.

1. Designating all of Lots 1 and 3 on Kitsilano IR # 6 (85% in favour of Yes)

a. 2434 Eligible voters

b. 1012 Cast their ballot

c. 861 Voted Yes

d. 145 Voted No

e. 6 Spoiled Ballots

Chiefs and Council’s next steps will require a Second Vote from Membership seeking

approval of the above Land Designation. There will be more information in the next

several weeks explaining the Second Vote process.

The result of the Referendum was an affirmation of the direction from Membership with

85% casting a ‘Yes’ vote. Chiefs and Council will continue to provide the necessary

leadership to become self sustaining with developing some of our Lands for present and

future generations.
