The Recreation Department manages the recreation facilities and programs of the Squamish Nation.
The Department manages the Chief Joe Mathias Centre (CJMC), which opened its doors on September 18, 1992, and which provides facilities for recreation, meetings, workshops and conferences. The Recreation Department also manages two youth centers and the elder’s facility located on Capilano IR#5, and is responsible for Humelchstn Park field.

Summer Fun Program is a Children’s Day Camp program for children between the ages of 4-12 years. The program ran for six weeks this year. Day trip destinations included; Splashdown Park Water Slides, Playland, Spanish Banks Beach, 2nd Beach Pool, Maplewood Farm, Cates Park, Stanley Park Water Park, White Pine Beach and other local Beaches and Parks. An average of 25 to 40+ Children attended each day.
During the weeks where children were not on their designated day trip outings, they came to our Open Gym Program at the Chief Joe Mathias Centre where they played games, soccer, California kick ball, floor hockey and many other fun events and games. Lunches were provided to the children daily.
Weight Room – open Monday to Thursday from 8:30am to 10:30pm and Fridays from 8:30am to 9pm.
Elders Gathering Place
- Weekly Social lunches, Birthday Lunches are held Bi-monthly.
- The big event of the year is the Christmas Dinner where 300+ elders and guests attend.
- Monday – Sewing day
- Tuesday -Scrapbooking and Card Making
- Wednesday – Massage Therapy, computers every 2nd week
- Thursday – Knifty Knitting, Crocheting and Knitting Gathering Day.
During November and December the Elders organized two craft sales for fundraising purposes. The Elders Gathering Centre was open during Christmas Break for the ladies to gather, do crafts and socialize.
Elders attended the 36th Annual Elders Gathering out in Abbottsford at the Tradex Center.
A Group of 28 Elders went to Tulalip for three days in August. The group went to visit the Hibulb Cultural Center, gambled at the Casino and shopped at the Seattle Premium Outlet Mall. .
Day trips were taken to the following places: Grand Villa Casino, Steveston, Fort Langley and Chilliwack.

We will be conducting a survey over the next few months to get some feedback from our members. More information on this will be coming soon. These will happen at some of our big events at the Chief Joe Mathias Centre, starting with the Community Information Sessions in October. We look forward to exciting new ideas on recreational activities for our Membership.
