Based on the most recent information from Department of Fisheries and Oceans this year’s Fraser River Sockeye run has been ‘One of the worst on record…’ Therefore, there will be no further sockeye openings on the Johnston Straight or the lower Fraser Region where we harvest our sockeye.
Our Nation sockeye fishery was not successful due to the low numbers. Due to conservation concerns the Nation has decided to cease our sockeye fishery this year to ensure there is enough sockeye to get to the spawning grounds. Therefore there will be no fresh sockeye distribution this year. The Nation will continue to try harvest other salmon species to assist with our ceremonial needs.
