A thank you letter was sent to the editor of The Chief:

Editor,

I wish to express my gratitude to the Squamish Nation for the wonderful reception they prepared to welcome the Olympic Torch into their community.

As a relatively newcomer to Squamish it was especially significant to me to have the opportunity to be at Totem Hall when the torch arrived. It was drummed in with great respect and then blessed by the elders.

The generosity of the Squamish Nation was evident as they gifted a beautifully woven headband to all those who came to Totem Hall to celebrate with them. Thank You. Hychka Siyam.

Brian Morton, Vancouver Sun

The Outdoor Recreation Capital of Canada more than lived up to its name Sunday, with about 500 people braving sometimes heavy showers in Squamish to support the Paralympic torch relay.

“This is a celebration of all Canadians,” said 52-year-old Vancouver resident Bruce Gilmour, a blind former summer Paralympic athlete and one of 29 torchbearers who wove through the streets of downtown Squamish.

“I’m so exceedingly proud of the people behind the Paralympic Games,” added Gilmour, who lit a cauldron as the final runner in Squamish, one of just 10 celebration communities across Canada to host the torch.

“It’s no longer about disability. It’s about everybody participating.”

Paralympic Torch Bearer :: Eileen Jacob

Eileen Jacob is the adult representative with Torch Bearing duties for Squamish Nation in the Paralympics in March, immediately following the Winter Games.  Eileen is no doubt ecstatic, but she manages to display a calm composure that is elegantly mature.

At the moment, Eileen plans to ride on the Olympic spirit while the Games are being held throughout February.  She anticipates receiving her torchbearer package in late February, but her training has already begun with constant yard work!  She is also taking advantage of the fitness programs offered at Totem Hall.  We are certain that Eileen will do us proud with her charisma elegantly displayed!

In view of the upcoming Winter Games, the First Nation Snowboard Team (FNST) is receiving unprecedented attention worldwide.  Aaron Marchant, executive director of FNST, was recently interviewed by the BBC on FNST’s phenomenal success.  Requests for interviews from press around the world continue to pour in on a daily basis.  When we sat down with Aaron, he had just turned down an interview request from the New York Times!

Aaron is the founder and champion behind this success story that is six years in the making.  The program has since grown to include over 200 youth from 12 divisional teams in BC, with a team manager assuming responsibility for each team.  The FNST operates a High Performance Team (HPT) to groom experienced snowboarders for competition.  To date, the team has taken 10 medals in BC series, and 2 of its members are competing nationally on the BC Provincial Half Pipe Team.  Aaron reiterates that the HPT program is striving to have our FNST athletes compete in the next Winter Olympic Games, while the recreation aspect of the program is an incentive for youth to do well in school!

The Squamish Valley Gas Bar Project is another successful revenue generating investment that will benefit the band.  This marks the opening of a second Gas Bar project of the band, and its success could potentially lead to more projects in the near future.

Tom Butler at Business Revenue Services commented that the North Vancouver Gas Bar project, operated in partnership with Superstore, has been a phenomenal  “win-win” venture for Squamish Nation.  It has been beneficial by creating numerous jobs over the years, while providing tax exemption benefits to all band members on fuel purchases.  “We have been talking about a Gas Bar project in the Valley for a considerable number of years, and it’s wonderful we have finally got it off the ground!”  Profit generated from sales will be accrued and directed back to the band community.

Lynnwood Marina Acquisition

Among all the latest projects Business Revenue Services (BRS) is working on, the recent acquisition of Lynnwood Marina is a significant one. The sizable property is on land that once belonged to Squamish Nation, and its re-acquisition holds cultural significance in restoring land to the band. In addition to the land, the property comes with a fully established marina and dock business assets, which the band has assumed operation since the acquisition.
